Toyota LandCruisers have a long-standing reputation for park brakes that can struggle to hold effectively—even when correctly adjusted. Add sand, dirt, mud, water and general off-road use, and the problem can become even worse.
The Powerstop Woven Park Brake Upgrade Kit has been developed as a direct replacement for the original equipment, with no vehicle modifications required, addressing several of the common causes of poor LandCruiser park brake performance.
Why LandCruiser Park Brakes Struggle
Several factors can contribute to poor performance and the need for constant adjustment:

Dirt, sand and mud ingress into the park brake drum accelerates friction material wear, causing the brake to quickly fall out of adjustment.

Incorrect brake shoe radius can result in only a small portion of the friction material contacting the drum, significantly reducing effective holding force.

Excessive tolerance or wear in the actuating components can mean too much lever travel is used before the park brake begins to engage.

Incorrect aftermarket hardware and springs can have excessive spring tension, effectively fighting against the park brake mechanism when it is applied.
The Powerstop Solution
At the heart of the upgrade is a high-performance woven friction material manufactured from synthetic Aramid/Kevlar fibres, fine brass wire and specialised resins.
Unlike conventional park brake linings, this material provides exceptional resistance to abrasion from sand, dirt and mud. Reduced wear means the park brake stays correctly adjusted for longer, particularly on vehicles regularly used off-road.
The woven material also delivers a high coefficient of friction from cold, providing strong initial grip and positive holding performance. It maintains excellent friction characteristics in both wet and dry conditions and can outperform conventional friction materials if exposed to oil contamination from a leaking seal or other unforeseen event.
Individually Radius Ground Brake Shoes
For a drum brake to perform correctly, the curve of the brake shoe needs to closely match the internal diameter of the brake drum.
This isn’t always the case with lower-quality aftermarket replacement shoes.
Every set of Brakebonders shoes used in the Powerstop Woven Park Brake Upgrade Kit is individually radius ground for correct fitment, maximising contact between the friction material and drum for more effective braking performance.
OE-Specification Hardware
Powerstop hardware kits are manufactured using brand-new original equipment samples as the reference, ensuring spring tension closely matches the original specification.
The kit includes the replacement hardware and springs required to complete the job, eliminating one of the common variables found with aftermarket park brake components.
Extended Park Brake Strut – Disc Rear 70 Series
Disc rear 70 Series LandCruisers have an additional issue: excessive tolerance within the park brake mechanism, including the length of the factory park brake strut or “dogbone.”
Powerstop’s extended park brake strut takes up this excess tolerance, allowing the park brake shoes to begin engaging earlier in the travel of the park brake lever.
The extended strut is included in Powerstop upgrade kits for applicable disc rear 70 Series LandCruisers.
